How to Get a Passport

International travel has become a daily part of people’s lives. About 42% of Americans already have a passport. Many people have questions about how to get a passport. We will now explain how to get a passport in detail. There are essentially two types of general passport applications. The first one is a new passport. If you meet any one of the following conditions, then you should apply for a new passport.

  1. You’re applying for a passport for the first time.
  2. Your current passport was issued 15 years ago (or more).
  3. Your passport is lost, stolen, or damaged.
  4. Your current passport was issued before the age of 16.

What documents do you for getting a passport?

Secondly, proof of citizenship. You must to provide one of the following documents to prove your US citizenship- a certified government issued birth certificate, an original naturalization certificate, or an expired passport.

Thirdly, proof of identity- a driver’s license or military ID card.

Finally, a passport photo. You need to provide a good passport photo, make sure the passport photo was taken in last 6 months, and do not wear glasses. You can get a passport photo at Costco, Walmart or CVS. We don’t suggest you take or make your own passport photo since the passport agency has very specific requirements.

Where to apply for a passport?

For getting a new passport, you must apply in person at your local post office or courthouse also know as passport acceptance facility. When you have all the documents, make an appointment with your local passport acceptance facility and bring all your documents with you to the appointment, and to to have your documents signed, executed, witnessed and sealed into an envelope by the acceptance agent. This process is referred to as the “Passport Execution Process” or “Sealed Application Procedure”. How long does it take to get a passport?

In terms of the processing time for getting a passport, there are two types of processing speed. Standard processing- processing can only be done through your local passport office, which takes about eight weeks for you to receive your passport.

Second option is the expedited processing. Expedited processing can go through the post office or passport expedited service company. If you request expedited service through the post office, it will take around 4 weeks to get your passport, if you go through a passport expedited service company, you can receive your passport in as little as 24-hours. However, you do pay an additional service fee on top of the government fee for the passport if you use a passport expedited service company. If you plan to travel within the next two weeks it is highly recommended that you use a professional expedited service company.

How much the cost of the passport?

The regular application fee for a passport book is $110. $140 for both passport book and card. If you request expedited service, there is a $60 expedite fee along with your regular application fee.
